Festivals (Matsuri)
Matsuri are festivals or rituals held to pray to the gods and buddhas or to the spirits of the ancestors. Festivals are traditionally held in spring to pray for a healthy crops and in autumn to thank the gods for an abundant harvest, in summer to disperse pests and disease, and in winter to celebrate the coming of a new year. There are all sorts of other “festivals” held without any connection to traditions, such as festivals for “meat” or for “second-hand books.”
