Coming of Age Day (Seijinshiki)

Adulthood legally begins at age 20. Coming of age is celebrated in early January each year for all young people who have turned 20 during the past year on Adult’s Day (Coming of Age Day). Formal “coming-of-age” ceremonies are sponsored by local government bodies. These ceremonies are generally held on or around the second Monday of January. Girls often dress up in long-sleeved kimono (furisode) and boys in dress suits or traditional formal haori-and-hakama attire for the occasion. The mayor or other head of the local government and other notables give speeches for the benefit of the young people. The ceremony brings together friends who have not seen each other since junior or senior high school, so it serves as a rather exciting occasion for many reunions.
