This month's suggested class activities use the article from "My Way Your Way" about stationery supplies designer Udagawa Kazumi. An abridged version of the article is provided to make it easier to use in the classroom.

【1】Stationery Supplies with a New Twist!
Ms. Udagawa says she has been doing creative things with stationery supplies since she was small. Adding some small decorative touch to a standard product makes it into something unique and personalized. This activity is aimed at getting students to think about the culture and meaning of personalizing stationery supplies or other everyday items to make them more attractive and giving them (to friends and others) as gifts.

1. Questions to help students' comprehension

a) What is Ms. Udagawa's occupation?

b) What kind of things does she make? Why does she make them?

c) What was she doing when she was young?

d) Why did she think she would make them herself?

e) What did she make using things that are not needed any longer?

f) What does she introduce in her books and workshops? Why?

g)「自分で作ったものにはそういう力がある」What does そういう力 mean?


2. Discussion points

h) Are you using any stationery that you have recreated or decorated yourself? What is it? What did you do to it? Why did you do it?

i) How does it feel different to use stationery that you created, compared to the stationary standard product? Why do you think it feels different?

j) Have you made any stationery or other things using recycled materials? What did you make?

k) Have you ever received a handmade gift that someone especially made for you? What was it? How did you feel?


3. Creative task

l) Make a handmade stationery item using materials you have right around you. Then, write about what you used and how you used them in Japanese. You may make or recreate other items if you wish. The following links may give you some ideas.

幼いときから、市販の文房具に何か工夫をして使っていたという宇田川さん。既製品に少し手を加えることで、それは世界でひとつのものになります。文房具など身近なものを楽しくアレンジして使ったり、プレゼントしたりする文化やその意味を考えることを目標にしているアクティビティです。

１．内容確認のための質問

a)宇田川一美さんの仕事は何ですか。

b)どんなものを作っていますか。なぜ作るのですか。

c)小さい時、どんなことをしていましたか。

d)どうしてレターセットやノートを自分で作ろうと思ったのですか。

e)いらないものを使って、最近作ったものは何ですか。

f)宇田川さんは、自分の本やワークショップで、どんな作り方をしょうかいしていますか。
それはどうしてですか。

g)宇田川さんは、自分で作ったものにはそういう力がある、と言っていますが、そういう力とはどんな力でしょうか。


2．ディスカッションのポイント

h)買ったものを自分でアレンジして使っているものがありますか。それは何ですか。どんなアレンジをしましたか。それはどうしてですか。

i)買ったものをそのまま使うのと、自分でアレンジしたものを使うのと、気持ちはちがいますか。どうちがいますか。どうしてそう感じるのでしょうか。

j)いらなくなったものを使って、何か作ったことがありますか。それは何ですか。

k)あなたは、手作りの何かをもらったけいけんがありますか。それは、どんなものでしたか。どう感じましたか。


3．表現活動のヒント

l)身近なものを使って、文房具を作ってみましょう。そして何を使ったのか、どうやってそれを使ったのかを日本語で書いてみましょう。文房具以外の物を作ってもいいです。下のリンクをヒントにしてください。
