【1】Interview Video Click Nippon meets Omae Koichi, amputee professional dancer

Omae Koichi's interview video starts with his self introduction, "Hello, I'm Omae Koichi, a professional dancer with a prosthetic leg." Although he lost his left leg from the mid-calf down, he didn't give up dancing. Through great determination and effort he gained the fabulous opportunity to dance at the closing ceremony for the Paralympics 2016. Omae says he is now enjoying life immensely. In this video, he tells us about his aspirations and his journey to success.

1. Questions to help students' comprehension:

a) What happened to Omae when he was 23 years old?

b) Why did he start to use a prosthetic?

c) How did Omae feel at the first lesson using the prosthetic? Why was that?

d) How does Omae explain the reason why he didn't give up dancing even though he had trouble dancing with the prosthetic?

e) Omae said that he decided to rely on people in order to continue dancing. Give two examples of what he did.

f) How did Omae's ideas about his dancing change when he started dancing without the prosthetic?

g) How important is it for Omae that he danced at the Paralympics? What did it mean to him?

h) What are Omae's aspirations for the future?


2. Discussion points:

i) Do you know anyone with a prosthetic who is engaged in sports, a performing art, or some other physical activity? If you do, please share the information with your class.


3. Creative activities:

「義足ですが、プロダンサーとして活躍しています」という自己紹介から始まる大前光市さんのインタビュービデオ。事故で左足の膝から下をなくしたにもかかわらず、踊ることをあきらめず、2016年のパラリンピックの閉会式で自分の踊りを世界に披露するに至った。「今、満たされている」と言う大前さんが、これまでの道のり、転機、そして今後の夢を語る。

1. 内容確認のための質問

a) 23歳の時に、大前さんにどんなことがおこりましたか。

b) 義足を付けた理由は何ですか。

c) 義足をつけて初めてのレッスンで大前さんはどんな気持ちになりましたか？　それはなぜですか？

d) 義足をつけて踊れなくても、ダンスをあきらめなかったのは、どうしてだと説明していますか。

e) ダンスを続けていくために、人に頼ることにしたと言っていますが、例えばどんなことをしましたか。二つあげてください。

f) 義足を外して踊ってみることで、大前さんの気持ちがどんな風に変わりましたか。

g) パラリンピックで踊ったことは、大前さんにとって、どんな意味がありましたか。

h) 大前さんは今後どのようなことをやっていきたいと話していますか。


2. ディスカッションのヒント

i) スポーツやパフォーマンスなどの分野で、義足で活躍している人を知っていますか。もし、知っていたらクラスで紹介してください。


3.表現活動のヒント
