【1】Let's Try Writing Senryu (or Haiku)

The festivities of Christmas and New Year's and the year-end holidays are just around the corner! At this time of year, you may have more memorable experiences and more opportunities to notice things that you don't usually notice. How about writing senryu to express your thoughts and feelings? In this issue, we introduce the class idea of Yu Hemin Sensei of Dongducheon Foreign Languages High School, Korea, "Let's Try Writing Senryu."

As Yoo Hyemin Sensei explains in one of her worksheets, senryu is a fixed form of poetry with three lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables each, the same as haiku. With 17 syllables in all, haiku is said to be the shortest form of poetry.

As senryu has fewer rules than haiku, you can create senryu more freely and enjoy the rhythm of the language. You might enjoy making senryu on an assigned theme like New Year's Day, Christmas, or winter/summer holidays.

In the class ideas suggested by Yoo Hyemin Sensei, students compare the poetry of Japan and Korea, but you can compare the poetry of your country and Japan.

You can find the senryu by Yoo Hyemin Sensei's students at the page above. Read each one and discuss the following points with your classmates. Who wrote the poem? Is it a male student or female student? What situation was the writer in when he/she wrote it? What kind of feelings are expressed in it?

In My Way Your Way, you can also find videos of high school students reciting their poems. Although they are not senryu or haiku, they serve as reference points for poetry writing and reciting. As you watch the videos, consider how the performance can more effectively express the feelings of the poem.

【1】川柳を作ってみよう

今年もあとわずかになり、休みが近づいてきました。クリスマスやお正月、この特別な季節には、心にのこることがあったり、普段気が付かないことに気が付いたりすることも多いのではないでしょうか。そんなとき、川柳を書いてみるのはどうでしょうか。今回は、くりっくにっぽん活用術から、韓国、東豆川外国語高校の ユ・へミン先生の「川柳を作ってみよう」という活動を紹介します。

ユ・へミン先生のワークシートに説明があるように、川柳は俳句と同じ、5･7･5の17音からなる定型詩です。これは世界で一番みじかい詩のかたちだと言われています。

川柳は、俳句より決まりごとが少なく自由に作れるので、言葉のリズムを楽しみながら、作ってみてください。「お正月」「クリスマス」「冬休み」など、クラスでお題を決めて書いてみるのも面白いですね。

ユ・へミン先生のクラスアイディアでは、日本と韓国の詩を比べるとなっていますが、あなたの国の詩の形と比べてみましょう。

また、ユ・へミン先生の生徒さんの作品もこのページに載っています。みんなで読んでみましょう。どんな人が書いたのか、男の子が書いたのか、女の子が書いたのか、どんな状況で、どんな気持ちが表れているか、など、みんなで話し合ってみましょう。

川柳・俳句ではありませんが、MY Way Your Wayに、中学生・高校生が自分の作った詩を朗読しているビデオがあります。合わせて鑑賞してみましょう。自分の作った詩を読むとき、どんなことに気を付けて読めば、気持ちが伝わるか考えてみましょう。
