High schools in Japan have various kinds of clubs: sports clubs like baseball and soccer as well as culture-related clubs like brass band and chemistry club. Gaga is in the mountain climbing club, and she climbed mountains as her school club activity. Gaga reports about her mountaineering experiences in summer and in winter.

a) When and where did Gaga go mountain climbing? How many days was the camp?

b) Why couldn't she sleep the night before?

c) Where was the starting point? What time did they leave there?

d) What was the mountain path like at the top? What was Gagas reaction? Describe her feelings.

e) How did Gaga feel when she got to the top?

f) Why did they sing a song at the top of the mountain?

(2) Last Climb of the 2014 Season (о´∀`о)

g) When did Gaga climb Mt. Oshiba?

h) Why was this climb the last for the year?

i) What was the unexpected surprise as they approached to the top of the mountain?

j) After descending the mountain, what did they cook for the dinner at the lodge? Was it a normal dinner?

k) The club members cannot climb mountains for the next 3 months (during the winter). What was Gaga's plan for those 3 months?


2. Research and discussion points (Questions about both reports)

l) Research school clubs (bukatsu) in Japan. What kinds of activities do they engage in?

m) Research the mountains that Gaga climbed. Where are they located on the map of Japan? How tall are they, and what do they look like? Share your findings with your classmates.

o) Discuss the merits of joining a club. What do you think might be the disadvantages of joining a club?
