【上段左】標茶高校では、生徒1人ひとりが個人目標を書いて教室にはります。わたしは、「人事を尽くして天命を待つ（できるだけの努力をして、あとは運命にまかせるの意）」をもじって「人事を尽くして息抜き忘れず」としました。クラス担任の堤先生は、熱血タイプの先生です。堤先生は、その日のできごと、がんばった人のことなどを記事にして、『我ら発展途上人』という学級新聞を毎日発行しています。朝のホームルームの前に配られるこの新聞をみんな楽しみにしています。
【下段左】7月に、「標茶町の自然を考える」をテーマに学校祭が行われました。わたしたち1年D組は、「道東の四季を楽しもう」と題して標茶町の自然をジオラマとステンドグラスで表現して展示しました。
【右】学校祭では、展示のほかに、自分たちでつくった半纏を着て「YOSAKOIソーラン」を踊りました。半纏は、安く仕入れたシーツをピンク、紫、橙、緑の4色に草木で染めてつくりました。半纏の背には学級目標の「桜梅桃李」（花それぞれによさがあるように、人もそれぞれ個性があるのだから、各々のいいところをのばそうという意味がこめられている）を 1文字ずつわたしが筆で書きました。

[Top left] At Shibecha High School, we each write out a personal motto and post it on the classroom wall. Based on an old Japanese aphorism that goes "Jinji o tsukushite tenmei o matsu" (Do your best and leave the rest to destiny), I made mine "Jinji o tsukushite, ikinuki wasurezu" (Do your best and don't forget to take a break). The teacher of the 1-D class, Tsutsumi-sensei, is the passionate type of teacher. Every day he publishes a class newspaper called Warera hatten tojojin (We "Developing People") which he fills with reports of daily events and articles about the achievements and activities of the students. We all look forward to reading this newspaper he hands out to us before our homeroom every morning.
[Bottom left] In July, we held our school festival on the theme "Thinking about Nature in Shibecha-cho." We in the 1-D class exhibited dioramas and stained-glass art projects on the theme of nature in the Shibecha area under the title "Enjoying Nature in Eastern Hokkaido."
[Right] In our school festival, we in the 1-D class also held a costume parade and performed a dance called "Yosakoi Soran" wearing hanten (happi coats) we made ourselves. We made the hanten from inexpensive sheet fabric and dyed them in four colors--pink, purple, orange, and green--using natural dyes. On the back of the hanten I brushed one character apiece of our class motto: O-bai-to-ri ("cherry, apricot, peach, plum"; meaning: Let us all develop our strong points, for just as every flower has its beauty, so every one of us has our unique traits).
