Students meet the seven Deai students for the first time. Using the video message, the pictures, and the "Portrait Sheet" students put together a self-introduction for one of the seven Deai students. Students assume the role of their Deai student and present their "self-introduction." Class members generate questions based on the self-introductions. |

Display the "Profile" pictures of the Deai students. Prime the students to listen for information and impressions of the first student they will meet, i.e., Mizushima Yu, by showing her video message. Use questions to prompt students to imagine what kind of person she is, i.e., her age and her personality. Feel free to show the video more than once.

Use the "Profile" pictures, information from the video and simple questions to construct a rough sketch of Yu.

Have one volunteer role play Yu introducing herself to the class.
|
|
Encourage the class to ask "Yu" questions. "Yu" can do her best to answer or respond with "wakarimasen." Record the questions for use in Activity 2.

Distribute the "Portrait sheet." As
a class, go over the directions and search for information about Yu. |
|
Split the class in six groups. Students watch the video, choose one of the six students and give a reason for their choice. Then Give each group the "profile" pictures of the Deai student they chose.

Display the profile pictures and have each group search for the "Portrait sheet" for their student. With the "Portrait sheet" students prepare a self-introduction and choose one person to role play the student doing a self-introduction to the class.

Students create at least one question during the self-introductions. Groups record class questions for use in Activity 2 and do their best to answer for their Deai student. |
