City in northwestern Chiba prefecture on the Edogawa river. Mainly a residential area inhabited by commuters to Tokyo, it is also part of the Keiyo (Tokyo-Chiba) industrial belt, with many heavy-industry and chemical plants. Pop.: approx. 454,000 (2001).
