The Guidelines for the Course of Study 《→gakushu shido yoryo 学習指導要領 Guidelines for the Course of Study》 for senior high schools state that the objectives of teaching home economics are "to foster understanding of the significance of the family and home, and the relationship between the family and society from an integrated perspective on healthy human development and lifestyle, and, at the same time, to impart necessary knowledge of domestic arts, and to cultivate cooperation between men and women in creative skills and practical attitudes toward household and community life."
Students must complete one credit in Home Economics Basics, Home Economics Integrated or Domestic Arts.
Schools usually have a special classroom with the necessary facilities for teaching home economics.
