The Guidelines for the Course of Study 《→gakushu shido yoryo 学習指導要領 Guidelines for the Course of Study》 for senior high schools state that the objectives of teaching civics are "to encourage students to actively observe contemporary society from a broad perspective, to deepen their understanding of its workings, to develop awareness of human nature and ways of life, and to nurture strong character and make a useful contribution as a member of a democratic and peaceful nation and society."
Under this category, which includes Modern Society, Ethics, and Politics and Economics, students must complete one credit course.
