Boards of education

きょういくいいんかい
Councils for administration of education setup at the prefectural, city, township, village, and "special wards" (tokubetsu-ku) level based on the Law for Local Administration of Education. Each board of education has a superintendent, board members (4-year terms), and a secretariat. The secretariat is usually staffed by supervisors of teaching and social education, etc. Boards of education manage almost all the local government educational and cultural affairs related to the schools, social education, culture, sports, etc., excluding only affairs related to universities and private schools.
