Driver's licenses
運転免許証
うんてんめんきょしょう
Prior to applying for a driver's license, it is usually necessary to attend a driving school to learn about traffic rules and to practice driving techniques. The actual driver's license is only issued after one has passed a written test administered by the Public Safety Commission at designated testing centers. The minimum age for a Type 1 regular license, which allows the holder to drive a standard passenger car, is 18, but persons 16 and above can get license just for motor scooters or motorcycles.
