Capital city of Japan. In 1868, the city of Edo, which had been the seat of the Tokugawa shogunal government (1603-1867), was renamed Tokyo, and the Imperial Court was moved from Kyoto to Tokyo. The center of politics, the economy, and culture, it is Japan's largest city with a population of about 12 million.
