■Thinking about lunch
According to a report of the public relations committee of Nara University-affiliated
high school, more than 70% of students at the school bring boxed lunches (bento),
15% use the school cafeteria, and the remaining 15% do both. Students give the
following reasons why they bring boxed lunches: mother makes it for them, using
the cafeteria is inconvenient, they enjoy opening up a boxed lunch and seeing
what is inside, and they can request their favorite foods. The basic types of
foods packed in boxed lunches are rolled egg, sausages, meat, and fried chicken.
Students who use the cafeteria give the following reasons: it is convenient,
they like eating a hot lunch, they can meet their friends there, and they can
choose what they like to eat. Students choose what they eat based on how they
feel that day.
