Hello!
My name is Anna. I am fourteen years old, and I'm a year
10 student at Palmerston North Girls' High School. I was
born in Palmerston North, New Zealand, where I still live,
although I hope to travel widely in the future.
There are three people in my family: my mum, my dad and
me, and one extremely important cat, Freddy, who is very
cute and lazy, and who loves to eat and sleep. Both my parents
are professors at Massey University. My mum can speak English
and some French, but my dad can only speak English. I have
taught my mum and dad a little Japanese, though they need
to learn more before they can have a conversation.
I am an avid reader; I read any sort of book so long as
it is interesting! I have so many books that I will have
to pack some away so I can buy more! My friends tease me
for spending so much time reading, but as long as I'm around
books, I'm happy!
I play the violin and have taught myself to play some pieces
on the piano! I started playing the violin when I was five;
I study the Suzuki method, which means I listen to lots
of tapes and try to make my playing sound as good! I am
currently learning Suzuki Book 7. I love playing the violin
because it helps me express many emotions, depending on
the piece I am playing. Playing pieces written by famous
musicians is also a real challenge that I have to work hard
to meet.
Another of my hobbies is netball. As I am very tall, I play
Goal Shoot and I dream about being as good as Irene van
Dyk, the Silver Fern Goal Shoot.
I have many friends and I love talking to them and meeting
new people. I belong to the Science Extension group at school,
as well as the book club, debating club and Amnesty International,
so my lunchtimes are very busy! I am studying two languages
this year... Japanese and French! I love learning both languages
as they seem to come naturally to me, and I hope to continue
studying them at university. I have to work hard to get
the marks I want to achieve, but I am lucky because I find
the work enjoyable and very worthwhile! I first started
learning Japanese when I was in Year 8, and I won my school
prize for being the top student. Last year I received a
Certificate of Excellence for Japanese and French. I also
enjoy studying English and last year I won an AFS World
Peace essay competition! One of my Japanese teachers sent
my essay to a friend in Japan who is a teacher, and he decided
to use it as a topic for his English class! I was very excited
and have been in contact with the teacher so I can find
out what his students thought of my work.
Learning a language needs passion, energy and strict teachers,
and I have been lucky enough to have teachers who have really
inspired me. Thanks to them, I have become intrigued with
Japan and finding out more about it. During my Japanese
class I watched my favourite movie, the Last Samurai; I
really enjoyed listening to the characters speak Japanese,
and I could understand a little of what they said. The scenery
was very beautiful and I would love to visit the shrines
I saw in the movie. I hope my love of languages, especially
Japanese, carries me far and wide.
