My
name is Serena. I was born on April 12, 1988. I am 16 years
old and a junior in high school in the little town of Menasha,
Wisconsin. I live with my mother and father. I have a 21-year-old
sister that lives in an apartment about ten minutes away
from my house. I have six pets: three cats named Minnie,
Reggie, and Turner, a dog named Mariah, and two birds named
Tampa Bay and Oreo.
For Kindergarten through
third grade, I went to Gegan elementary. I loved it there
and I had so many friends and everyone was nice to everyone
else. Then, in fourth grade, I was asked to be in the ALPS
program. ALPS is a program for students that were the most
gifted and talented in the district. I had to switch schools
and go to Clovis Grove. Since I was only in fourth grade,
this was a very hard transition for me. I had to leave all
my old friends and go to a completely new school and try
to make new friends. Being the friendly and outgoing person
that I was, my family and I were convinced this wouldn't
be very hard for me. We were wrong. The students that weren't
in the ALPS program didn't want to be friends with anyone
that was in it. Even the kids that had gone to Clovis all
their lives were shunned by their peers when they entered
the program. This made the transition much harder than I
had thought. During fourth grade the only people that were
friends with me were other “ALPSies.” Eventually in fifth
grade the other students decided we were just like them
and we all became good friends.
Now I am a junior in
high school and have learned a lot in my 17 years. I am
looking forward to college more than anything right now.
I'm not sure exactly where I want to go right now but I
know I am definitely going to go. The things I am most involved
in right now are DECA and I volunteer at the local humane
society. DECA is a business and marketing club at my school.
My best friend Brooke and I joined in last year and this
year are officers. We go to leadership conferences and competitions
at the local, state, and national levels. DECA is a club
that is all over the world and looked at very prestigiously
by workplaces and colleges. I love all types of animals
and this year I have started volunteering at the Fox Valley
Humane Association. I mostly volunteer working with the
cats and answering questions people have about the animals
or policies. All my life, I have had many different types
of animals. We've had dogs, cats, birds, ferrets, rabbits,
mice, and many others. I hope someday to work with animals
for my career. If I don't have a job working with animals,
I will definitely have pets of my own.
