I'm Xiaoyue, 16 years old.
I don't remember exactly when I started to get interested
in Japan. Maybe it was when I first saw Doraemon on TV,
or when I saw the pretty words lined up in a Japanese book. Anyway,
it is not that important now. Whatever the case is, I started to
be really fascinated by Japan, a country not so far away from China.
I
first saw Japanese animation when I was little because my older brother
liked it. I liked the series of comic books called 'Doraemon' by
Fujiko Fujio and used to read them one after another, for entire
days. The characters I learned about in 4th grade, Nobita, who is
good-natured but bullied, Jaian, strong and rough, sneaky Suneo,
pretty Sizuka and Doraemon who brings out a variety of strange items…they
all accelerated my fascination with Japan. Oh how wonderful Japan
is!
As I became older, I learned more about Japan; a country with
a diligent hard-working population, prosperity, international importance,
and long-lasting tradition. The Japanese animation that intrigued me
to Japan is one of the most important cultural aspects of the country.
I wished to learn and understand more and more about Japan, and I selected
Japanese as my second language to learn in my middle high school.
It has been 5 years since I started learning Japanese.
During this period, I learned so many things. And of course,
my fascination with Japanese animation has grown stronger and stronger.
I believe that learning Japanese and being fond of the Japanese animation
positively affect each other. Japanese animation is like an angel with
dreamy feathers who takes me to a wonderland, and like a wise elderly
person, it teaches and leads me to Japanese language study.
When I first
started to watch the Japanese animation, I only found it interesting
and had no further thoughts. As I learned more about Japanese culture,
I realized that the animation is more than just beautiful pictures.
I revisited the animation that I had watched before, 'Saint Seiya'
tells what justice is, what friendship is, and 'Urusei Yatsura' illustrates
sensitive and suggestive emotions and 'Rurouni Kenshin' teaches the
courage and gentleness of Samurai spirit. It all makes up my habits
of saying "There is only one truth" when I encounter a problem, and
"Kawaii!” when I see cute toys. Like Sakuragi Hanamichi from "Slam
Dunk", I say "Wahaha, I'm a genius!" when I have achieved something
after working hard. I always want to protect my important people even
if I do not have a sword. I often dream of the petals of cherry blossoms
falling all over the sky. I can clearly imagine the pretty kimono.
See what dances is my mind? Japan is where my dreams start.
When we try to understand a country's
real meaning, it is not enough to enjoy the beautiful sceneries of
the country, but we need to know the culture of the country. Mt. Fuji
has already become not just a comfortable view to me. The sky full
of cherry blossom is not just decorating the town prettily. Even snow
that has not been melted for hundreds of years cannot cover the Samurai
spirit. Even trees that are naked after losing all their cherry blossoms
cannot fade the tender communication that people have between
themselves.
Feel the culture of Japan by knowing Japan.
Appreciate the beauty of the culture by experiencing Japan.
I love Japan not because the Japanese economy has developed
strongly but because the culture supports the economy as its base.
Let's try to understand the real features of Japan.
Let's not just smile at each other from a distance, but let's go together, hand in hand.
When I first started to learn Japanese pronunciation,
I wondered how Japanese people in my age pronounce the language and
how they memorize the words, saying "a, i, u, e, o"
When I was leaning conversation in Japanese, I wondered
how Japanese kids say "Yoroshiku onegaisimasu" with what
kind of voice, what kind of smile on their faces.
We used to wonder
how our young Japanese teacher studied and lived in Japan, not having
the courage to actually call him 'sensei'.
We used to stand on the beach of the East China Sea and
longed for our neighbor Japan because guessing and imagining were
all we could do.
Now not only can the prime minister of Japan, Mr. Koizumi
read the magazine 'People's China' and understand our
feelings, but even high school students like me can know about Japan
and understand the culture and emotions of Japanese people have through
studying the Japanese language. The connection between Japan and
China has gotten stronger and we together advance towards 'peace
and development', adjusting to the globalization movement of the
world.
Although there are many problems left between Japan and China,
the friendly relationship is being gradually established. Let's value
the relationship that we have built between the two countries. Let's
understand each other as youth in both countries. And let's develop
our friendly relationship further by our hands.
