幼少期
わたしは1987年7月22日にカリフォルニア州オーシャンサイドで生まれました。母はダイアナ、父はリチャードです。父は海兵隊員で、当時カリフォルニアに駐留していました。両親はわたしが生まれるまえ、沖縄に数年間住んでいました。2歳のときにミズーリ州セントルイスへ移り、4歳になるまでそこに暮らしていました。それからウィスコンシン州アップルトンへ引っ越しました。ここはメナーシャから5分ぐらいのところです。アップルトンへ引っ越した直後に両親は離婚し、親権は母親が得ました。父のもとはよく訪ねますが、ふだんは母と住んでいます。その後、母が妊娠したため、祖母のキャレンが同居するようになりました。祖母はわたしにとって第二の母のようです。妹のミシェルは1991年に生まれました。幼少期はサマースクール・プログラムや教会活動をつうじて劇にたくさん出演しました。サッカーとバスケットボールもやりましたが、どちらもあまり上手ではありません。中学1年生のときに出場したサッカーの大会でひざの大けがをして以来、スポーツ全般から遠ざかっています。７歳のとき、母は再婚し、メナーシャへ引っ越してきました。当時通っていたクロビス・グローブ小学校のすぐ近くの家です。1995年には妹のクリスティーが生まれました。幼稚園の先生は連絡帳にたくさん書いてくれて、わたしがどれだけエネルギッシュか母に伝えていました。ただ、もう少しおしゃべりをやめるようにとも書かれていました。小学校時代は外交的でフレンドリーな性格、本をたくさん読んで、近所の子とポグ（カードゲーム）をよくやりました。再び引っ越すことになったときは、近所の人たちとさよならしなければならず、とても悲しかったです。でも学校は同じでした。新しい地域では子どもがそれほど多くなく、結局妹たちと遊びました。
家族
今は母のダイアナ、義父のジョー、妹のミシェルとクリスティー、そして弟のウェストンといっしょに暮らしています。母は会計士、義父は電気技師です。ミシェルは12歳、クリスティーは8歳、ウェスティンは2歳です。わたしと祖母のキャレンはとても仲がよく、両親の離婚以来、祖母はわたしにとって第二の母親です。曾祖母のグラディスはわたしのことを小さいときから見守ってくれています。たくさん本を読んでくれて、小さいときから読むことを教えてくれました。わたしが本を好きなのは曾祖母の影響かもしれません。うちにはレディとスクービーという犬が2匹いましたが、引っ越したときに手放してしまいました。ファブリンクというハムスターもいましたが、昨年夏にウィスコンシン・デルズに旅行中に、おりから逃げてしまいました。母はファブリンクが自力で外に出たのではないかと言っています。たぶんそうでしょう。うちの家族は楽しいですが、わたしはバイトや勉強、バンド活動などで忙しく、なかなか会えません。バイト先はマクドナルドで、チームの育成係をしています。つまり新入社員のトレーニングをしているのです。マクドナルドでいちばん好きなのはドライブスルーのレジ係です。
友だち
時間があるときは友だちと出かけます。友だちはみな変わっていますが、おもしろい人たちでもあります。映画を見たり、ショッピング・モールで買いものをしたり、誰かの家で映画を見ます。うちに来られるのはあまり好きではありません。なぜならうちはみんなせかせかしているからです。でもときどき招くことはあります。バーンズ・アンド・ノーブルで何時間も本を読むこともあります。バーンズ・アンド・ノーブルは大型書店で、音楽店やスターバックスもあります。座って本を読んだり、おしゃべりをしたり、何時間もコーヒーを飲んだりしています。読書好きでない友だちも多いので、いっしょにバーンズ・アンド・ノーブルに出かける友だちはほんの少しです。友だちとはときどきヘビーメタルやロック、パンクなどのコンサートにも出かけます。わたしと同じ音楽の趣味の友だちが多く、気があいます。クロビス小学校時代や中学校時代に友だちができましたが、それ以外の友だちとは演劇やバンド活動で知りあいました。友だちの多くがバンドなどの活動に参加しているため、よく会います。仕事をとおして知りあった人も多く、いっしょに楽しく仕事をしています。
学校
昔は学校が大好きでした。最近は、人生で成功するためには必要だとわかっているものの、あまり好きではありません。今とっている科目はアメリカ史、スピーチ、上級代数、スポーツ、吹奏楽、化学IIと日本語５です。昼食時間は40分で、友だちとタコ・ベル、マクドナルド、バーガーキングやアービーズへ出かけます。英語関連の授業が好きなので、いちばん好きな科目はスピーチです。書くことや人前で話すことがとても好きなので、スピーチはわたしにぴったりです。友だちのほとんどが人前で立って話すのが嫌いですが、わたしは大丈夫です。ただ、準備していないと、スピーチ前は緊張します。化学や上級代数は好きではありませんが、それ以外の科学は好きです。去年は生物をとり、とても好きでした。化学は数学の要素がたくさんあるのできらいです。
バンド
クロビス小学校の5年生のときからバンドをやっています。担当はアルトサックスで、今は吹奏楽団、応援団バンドとジャズバンドをやっています。応援団バンドはメナーシャ高校のフットボールやバスケットボールの試合で演奏します。楽しいし、観客の反応はすごいです。フットボールの試合ではハーフタイムショーもやります。メナーシャ高校時代、うちのバンドはランボーフィールドに2度行きました。最初は高校1年生のとき、2度目は去年の冬です。わたしはジャズバンドもやっています。メンバーはいずれもジャズ音楽を学びたい、上手になりたいと思う人たちばかりです。コンサートすべてに出演しますし、街のイベントにも参加します。ソロ・アンサンブルも毎年やっています。ソロ・アンサンブルとは吹奏楽団メンバー全員が必ず参加しなければいけないもので、ジャズバンドは毎年それに出場するのです。一つ星をもらえれば州大会に出場できます。ソロ・アンサンブル大会での最高得点が一つ星です。今年は１ポイントを獲得したものの、星はつかなかったので州大会には進出できませんでした。
バンドの授業は楽しいです。メナーシャ高校のバンドは2部門に分かれています。コンサートバンドと吹奏楽団です。コンサートバンドは初心者と1年生向け、吹奏楽団は上級者や上級生向けです。吹奏楽団ではコンサートによって、いろいろなタイプの曲を演奏します。どのコンサートに向けて準備しているか次第です。クリスマス・コンサートやポップ・コンサート（ポップスや人気のある曲を演奏します）があり、3年生追い出しコンサートでは1年間練習したいちばん難しい曲やクラシック音楽を演奏します。いちばん好きなのは3年生追い出しコンサートです。新しいことに挑戦するのが好きだし、演奏する曲はどれも難しく、練習のしがいがあるからです。バンドはこれまでも、そして今も、わたしの気に入っているクラスです。
舞台で
小さいときから舞台で演ずるのが好きでした。親戚が来るとちょっとしたお芝居をしてみせたものです。夏季プログラムでは7歳から10歳になるまで、ほかの友だちと歌ったり演じたりしました。教会や学校などで劇や歌を披露したこともあります。小学校時代はクラス演劇に出ましたが、それ以上の規模のものに出たことはありません。11歳のとき、合唱の先生がローレンス・アカデミー女子合唱団を薦めてくれましたが、母と検討し、わたしはやはり歌よりも劇が好きだという結論に達して、合唱団に参加するのはやめました。でも、学校の合唱団やスイング・コーラスでは歌い続けています。その年の冬、教会のクリスマス劇でわたしはマリアの役を演じました。中学校時代は、学校の演劇には出ず、ユース・グループなどの夏季公演などに参加していました。サッカーとバスケットボールに集中したかったのですが、膝をけがしてしまい、スポーツそのものをやらなくなりました。数年間、夏季公演にも出られませんでした。
中学3年生の終わった年の夏、母にメナーシャ高校でやっているサマースクールに参加するよう言われました。乗り気ではなかったのですが、母との議論には勝てないので、サマー・ジェイ・プレイヤーズに参加することにしました。これも夏季公演を行う劇団です。大作を1つやっただけの劇団で、これまで参加した劇団とは少し違いました。いっしょに参加していた妹はとても緊張していたので、そばにいましたが、わたしはいちばん年上で、それがいやでした。その年のミュージカルは「ナイト（騎士）・トゥー・リメンバー」という題名で、子どもが気を失い、中世へ戻り、竜をやっつけて街を救うという話です。ばかばかしくも思えましたが、やってみることにしました。先ほども書きましたが、わたしはあまり歌うのが好きでなく、ソロなどとんでもないという感じです。わたしの役は「レックス」でいじめっ子。でもその子が気を失って昔に戻ったとき竜になっていたので、わたしは竜も演じました。友だちも妹もわたしのことを笑いましたが、そのうち大変なことに気づきました。ソロがあったことです。ソロなんて恐ろしい。とても緊張しました。せりふはすぐに覚えられたので、歌の練習をずっとやりました。初日の夜、監督からマイクはないから、肉声でうんと声を張り上げなければならないと言われました。頭の中は最悪のことばかり考えていましたが、監督はわたしを信じてマイクを渡さなかったようです。でも、何とかやり遂げて、わりとうまくいきました。歌というよりはせりふのようでしたけど、声が割れることもなく、結果としては大丈夫だったと思います。
次の夏、学校を通じて別のプログラム、ブロードウェイ・バウンドに参加しました。サマー・ジェイ・プレイヤーズでは最年長でしたが、これは高学年向けなので、すんなり溶け込めると思いました。劇は「スリーピー・ホロウ」で、わたしは先生の役でした。あまり目立つ役ではなく、がっかりしましたが、うまくいくときといかないときがあります。それが舞台であり演劇なのです。オーディションで失敗して役をもらえないこともあれば、主役になることもあります。役に合うかどうかということだと思います。昨年秋に高校の演劇でニール・サイモンの「噂」が上演されたのですが、そのときは「キャシー・クーパー」を演じました。この作品はとてもおもしろくて、笑えました。これまでやったなかで「噂」がいちばん気に入っているかもしれません。

この写真シートで、アメリカの生徒は日本の生徒が毎日どのような生活をしているかわかります。アメリカ人の生徒と似ている点もあり、すごいと思いました。牧場や寮のある専門的な高校に通っている人もいましたが、アメリカと似ていると思います。この写真を見て、日本の生徒たちの余暇やバイト、学校の様子や、家族、住んでいる場所についてもわかりました。わたしたちもこういう写真シートを作って日本の生徒たちに自分たちのことを伝えることができると思います。シートのキャプションを読んで楽しかったし、日本の生徒について学ぶことができました。

Childhood
I
was born on July 22nd, 1987 in Oceanside, California to parents
Diana and Richard. My dad was in the marines, and was stationed
in California at the time. Both my parents had lived in Okinawa,
Japan at the marine base for several years before my birth.
When I was about two years old, we moved to St Louis, Missouri
and lived there until I was four. Then we moved to Appleton,
Wisconsin, which is about five minutes away from Menasha.
My parents divorced shortly after we moved to Appleton, leaving
my mother with full custody. I frequently visited my father,
but lived with my mom. My grandma Karen moved in shortly after
to help my mom because she was pregnant, and she became a
sort of second mother to me over the years. My sister Michelle,
was born in 1991. As a child, I was involved in many plays
and drama productions through my summer school programs and
church. I also played soccer and basketball, but wasn't very
good at either of those sports. Ever since I badly injured
my knee during a soccer tournament in 7th grade, I had to
drop out of sports in general. When I was seven, my mom remarried
Joe and we moved to Menasha about a block away from my school
at the time, Clovis Grove Elementary. My sister, Kristy, was
born shortly after our move in 1995. My kindergarten teacher
sent home notes to my mom a lot, telling her how enthusiastic
I was, but I needed to stop talking so much. I was very outgoing
and friendly in elementary school; I read books a lot, played
Pogs (game with cardboard chips), and played with my neighbor.
When we moved again, I was very saddened because that meant
I had to say goodbye to my neighbors, but I still went to
the same school. In my new neighborhood, there weren't very
many children to play with, so I had to play with my sisters
a lot.
Family
I
live with my mom, Diana, step-dad Joe, sisters Michelle and
Kristy, and brother Weston. My mom is an accountant, and Joe
is an electrical engineer. Michelle is twelve, Kristy is eight,
and Weston is two. I am also really close with my grandma,
Karen, who has become a sort of second mother to me since
my parents divorced, and my great-grandma Gladys, who always
watched me when I was little. She read to me so much, and
basically taught me to read at a very young age. I think it's
her literary influences that lead me to love reading so much
too. My family used to have two dogs, Lady and Scooby, but
we had to give them up when we moved to our new house. We
also used to have a hamster, Fabrink, but he escaped from
his cage while we were vacationing in Wisconsin Dells this
past summer and we never found him. My mother thinks he got
outside somehow, which was probably the case. My family can
be really fun, but I don't see them very much because I'm
usually either working, or doing homework or band-related
things. I work at McDonald's, and am a crew-trainer, which
means I train new employees. My favorite place to work in
McDonald's would have to be in the Drive-Thru as the cashier.
Friends
In
my spare time, I hang around with my friends a lot. My friends
are ver weird, but fun all the same. We usually go to movies,
go to the mall and shop, or just hang out at someone's house
and watch movies. I usually don't like having people over
because my family can be kind of hectic, but once in a while
we all go to my house. Sometimes, we go to Barnes and Noble
and sit and read for hours. Barnes and Noble is a huge bookstore,
which has a music section, and a Starbucks. So we sit and
read books, talk, and drink coffee for several hours sometimes.
Not a lot of my friends like to read that much, so it's usually
very few who accompany me to Barnes and Noble. My friends
and I go to concerts sometimes, usually heavy metal, rock
or punk shows. Most of them share similar musical tastes with
me, and we connect in that sense. I met some of my friends
at Clovis and in middle school, but the others I met through
drama or band. Most of my friends are in band or other classes
with me, so I see them a lot. I also have many friends I met
through work, and we have a lot of fun working together.
School
When
I was younger, I used to really enjoy school. Nowadays, I
know I need it to excel in life but don't really like being
there. I take U.S. History, Speech, Advanced Algebra, Recreational
Sports, Wind Ensemble, Chemistry II, and Japanese 5. Lunch
is about forty minutes long, and my friend and I either go
to Taco Bell, McDonald's, Burger King, or Arby's. My favorite
class is probably Speech right now, because I really like
English-related classes. I really like to write and speak
in front of people, so Speech is perfect for me. Many of my
classmates hate getting up in front of people and giving speeches,
but I never really mind. Unless I'm unprepared, then I tend
to get kind of nervous before speeches. I really don't like
Chemistry or Advanced Algebra, but I like other kinds of science.
I took Biology last year and really liked it; I just don't
like Chemistry because math is so involved.
Band
I've
been involved with band since I was in 5th grade at Clovis.
I play the alto saxophone, and am now involved in Wind Ensemble,
Pep Band, and Jazz Band. In Pep Band, we play at some of Menasha
High School's football and basketball games; it's usually
a lot of fun and the crowd's reaction is amazing. We even
do half-time shows at some football games, and our band went
to Lambeau Field twice while I was attending MHS. Once when
I was a freshman, and the second time this past winter. I
also participate in Jazz Band, which is for the dedicated
musicians who want to learn about and excel in Jazz music.
We play at every band concert, and sometimes go and perform
at town events and every year, we do solo ensemble. Solo ensemble
is for everyone in Wind Ensemble because it's required, and
Jazz Band competes there every year. If we receive a 1-Star,
we go to state. That's the best score you can receive in solo
ensemble competitions. This year, we received a 1, but we
couldn't move on to state considering we didn't get the star.
I really enjoy band class; the MHS band is divided into two
sections: Concert Band and Wind Ensemble. Concert Band is
mostly for beginners and freshman, as Wind Ensemble is for
upperclassmen and advances musicians. In Wind Ensemble, we
play many different types of songs; it depends on what concert
we're preparing for. We have a Christmas concert, a Pops concert
(in which we play Pop songs or popular songs), and a Senior
Send-Off concert, in which we play classical music or the
most difficult pieces we've been working on all year. My favorite
concert would probably be the Senior Send-Off concert, because
I enjoy a challenge, and some of the music we play for that
concert is challenging and makes me work. Band is, and always
has been, one of my favorite classes.
On Stage
Ever
since I was little, I've always loved being up on stage and
performing. I always put on little shows for my relatives
whenever they came over. Through summer programs, I sang and
acted with other children from when I was seven until the
summer I turned ten. We performed plays and songs in front
of churches, schools, and other functions. In elementary school
I acted in several class plays, but nothing big. When I was
eleven, my choir teacher recommended me for the Lawrence Academy
Girl's Choir. My mom and I thought about it, but concluded
that I preferred acting to singing and I didn't want to sing
in such a serious choir. I continued to sing in my school's
choir and in swing choir. That winter, I played Mary in my
church's production of the Christmas Story. In middle school,
I didn't try out for any school plays and just participated
in summer productions through youth groups and such. I tried
to focus on soccer and basketball, until I injured my knee
quite badly and had to drop out of sports altogether. I also
stopped acting in the summer productions for a couple years.
The summer after my 9th grade year, my mom told me I had to
sign up for one class in summer school offered through MHS.
I really didn't want to, but I knew this was one argument
I wouldn't win so I caved and decided to sign up for Summer
Jay Players, which is another summer acting group. This group
just did one major play, and was a bit different than the
ones I had participated in before. But my sister was also
in it, and she was nervous so I was there to help her out,
too. I was the oldest kid there, and that kind of bothered
me. The musical was announced, and it was called 'A Knight
to Remember', which was about a kid who faints and goes back
in time to the Medieval Times to fight a dragon and save a
town. It sounded a bit stupid to me, but nevertheless, I tried
out. Like I mentioned before, I'm not a big fan of singing,
much less soloing. I was cast as 'Rex', who was a bully in
present time but when the kid fainted and went back in time,
was a dragon. I had to play a dragon. My sister laughed at
me, along with all my friends, but then I realized something.
I had a solo. I was so scared to solo, and I really get nervous.
I memorized all my lines quickly, and kept practicing my song.
Opening night came, and the director told me that I wouldn't
have a microphone, so I had to sing it out and really project.
That made everything so much worse in my head. But he had
enough faith in me to not give me a microphone, so I belted
it out and did fairly good. It didn't sound much like singing,
more like talking. But I didn't squeak or choke, so everything
turned out ok in the end.
The following summer, I decided to sign up for the other acting
program offered through my school, Broadway Bound, which was
for older kids. I figured I would fit in better there, instead
of Summer Jay Players where I had been the oldest. We did
the play 'Sleepy Hollow', and I was cast as a minor role of
a teacher. I was upset, but some plays you really make it,
some you don't. That's just the way theatre and being on stage
works; you can have one bad audition and not even get cast
in one play, and get the lead in the next. It's all a mater
of fitting the part. I actually tried out for my high school's
production of the Neil Simon play, 'Rumors' last fall, and
was cast as 'Cassie Cooper'. The play was a farce, and was
really funny. 'Rumors' was probably my favorite play I've
ever done. |

These cards are a swell way for students in America to
get a real picture of what Japanese students deal with on
a daily basis. Some of the Japanese students have so much
in common with us as American students; it's amazing. Although
some of them went to vocational schools on farms and boarding
schools, it was still very much like school here in America.
Those cards gave students in America a glimpse of what Japanese
students do for fun, work and what they learn in school.
Also their family lives and where they live were covered
in the cards. It would be beneficial for our class to make
these cards to share our issues with Japanese students.
I had fun reading these cards and learning about other students
in Japan.
