Shuto Ozora, a university student who had an enduring fascination for yokai since young founded a study group at his university. He says yokai are as much a part of his life as living and breathing. He talks about his encounter and enduring fascination of yokai.

■Essence of the article

・The picture books one reads when young becomes the foundation for one's later interests.

・If one can't find the place to pursue one's interest, create it yourself.

・There are things that you can't find on the internet. It's more interesting to meet people and hear their stories.

・Enjoyment of any topic increases when one talks to people of different backgrounds and interests, and gain new perspectives.



【2】Suggested class activities

a)When and how did Mr Shuto encounter 'yokai'?

b)Why did Mr Shuto want to set up a study group of yokai at his university?

c)What kind of activities do the study group do?

d)Give some examples of the information that Mr Shuto collected only because he visited Hinoemata village himself, not through books and the internet.

e)Group work: Ask the following questions to your classmates to find out about their childhood and interests.
・Do you remember any picture books that you found scary but engrossing?
・How has the book affected your current interests and passions?

f)Pair work : Interview and role play
How would Mr Shuto answer these questions? Discuss with your partner and write a script. Then role play the interviewer and Mr Shuto using the script.
・What was your interest when young?
・Do you think it was somebody's influence?
・How (what kind of activities) were you enjoying it when young?
・Are you still interested in it? If so, how are you enjoying it?
・What did you learn from enjoying it? How do you think you are influencing other people by enjoying it?

g)Interview one of your classmates using the above questions. Change or add questions as required. Then in class, share your findings about the classmate from the interview.

小さいころから妖怪が大好きだった少年が、大学に入って自分の興味を追及するため妖怪研究会を立ち上げた。呼吸するのと同じ感覚で妖怪にふれている、という首藤さんがその魅力を語る。

?あなたは、小さいとき、怖いけど好きだった絵本はありますか。
?その本は、今のあなたが興味を持ったり夢中になったりすることに、何らかの影響を与えていますか。

f)ペアーワーク：インタビューとロールプレイ
首藤さんに、次の質問をしたら、どう答えると思いますか。クラスメートとペア―になって相談してスクリプトを書いてください。
そして、そのスクリプトを使って、インタビューをする人と首藤さんのロールプレイをしてください。
・あなたは、小さいとき、何に興味がありましたか。
・それに興味を持ったのは、だれかの影響がありましたか。
・小さいとき、そのことをどんな風に楽しんでいましたか。
・今もそのことに興味を持っていますか。今はそのことをどんな風に楽しんでいますか。
・自分がそのことを楽しむことを通じて、どんなことを学びましたか。また、他の人にどんな影響を与えていると思いますか。

g)上の質問を使ってあなたのクラスメートにインタビューしてください。必要なら質問を変えたり付け加えたりしてください。そのインタビューでわかったことをクラスのみんなとシェアーしてください。
