【1】Walking the Talk: Bansho Writes Fiction in University
In 2013 we interviewed Bansho, who was then a member of his high school's literature club, composing tanka poetry and writing fiction. In 2012, Bansho had wowed the audience when he composed a poem on the spot for the final round of the All Japan High School Culture Festival. Now, five years later, we asked Bansho what he is thinking about and aspiring to. What do you think he was trying to express with the poem he composed in the 2012 "poetry boxing," on the theme of "dam"?

1. Questions to help students' comprehension
a) How can we tell that Bansho is a man of action?
b) Bansho says that he read a huge number of really interesting books and his reading changed his mind. How did his ideas about the form and message of fiction change?
c) What is his purpose in posting interesting material on Twitter once a month?
d) What resolution did Bansho make about writing fiction? What kind of novels is he writing at the moment?
2. Discussion points and research
e) Watch Bansho's performance at the poetry boxing event and/or read his poem titled "Dam." Then discuss the following points in class.

1. What is the word used to contrast to "Dam"?
2. What do you think "Dam" symbolizes in this poem? (What is "Dam" a metaphor for?)
3. Find the expressions that are used repeatedly. What emotions do the repeated expressions evoke?
4. Identify the poetry techniques used in this poem. Are they similar to those used in poetry techniques in your language. Or are they very different?
f) Research Japanese poetry techniques. Find similarities and differences between those of Japanese and your language. Share your findings with your classmates.
3. Creative tasks
g) Practice reading this poem aloud, considering the following points.
• What emotions do you want to express?
• Where do you read with emphasis and where do you read quietly?
• How would you change the pace of reading?
• Where would you make pauses to make it sound more effective?
Once you become confident in reading, record your reading and share it with class. Discuss what features of the reading captures the emotion of the poem.
h) At the Click Nippon website, there is another video clip of a student reciting a poem. Watch Ryota's recitation of his poem "Fukushima e." Try reading "Fukushima e" considering the points mentioned in g).

2013 年の My Way Your Way でのインタビュー時には、高校の文芸部で短歌をつくったり、小説を書いていた万象さん。万象さんが 2012 年に全国高校総合文化祭で即興で詠んだとき、その詩の素晴らしさに会場はどよめいた。あれから、5 年。今、大学生の万象さんは、どんなことを考え、どんなことに挑戦しているのだろうか。また、「詩のボクシング」で優勝した即興の詩「ダム」には、何が表現されているのだろうか。

e) 2012年の「詩のボクシング」の決勝戦の動画を観て、またその詩を読んで、クラスで話し合いましょう。

f) あなたの母語の詩に使われる技法と、日本語の詩の技法とはどんな違いがあるのか、リサーチしてみましょう。そして分かったことをクラスで話し合いましょう。
3. 表現活動のヒント
g) 次のことを考えながら、この詩を音読の練習をしてみましょう。
• どんな気持ちをこめて読みますか。
• どこを強調して読みますか。どこを弱く読みますか。
• どこを速く、どこをゆっくり読みますか。
• どこに間（ポーズ）をおきますか。
上手に読めるようになったら、録音、録画をしてクラスのみんなと鑑賞しましょう。そして、どのような読み方が効果的か、話し合ってください。
h) くりっくにっぽんで紹介しているもう一つの詩、「福島へ」の朗読を聞いて、またその詩を読んで、音読の練習をしてみましょう。
