【1】Part-time job as a miko
How do you spend the year-end and the New Year holidays? Do you go on a trip with friends? Do you spend quiet time with your family? Natsu spent her holidays doing some unusual work. She worked as a miko, or "shrine maiden"! It is somewhat unusual job specific to the New Year season in Japan. Let's read Natsu's report!

1. Questions to help students' comprehension
a) What day is Omisoka? What day is Gantan? Why do you think those days have special names?
b) Natsu worked as a miko. What did she do? Give examples. What did she wear?
c) Why did many people from businesses come to the shrine on January 5th?
d) Natsu says that her New Year holidays were full of happiness, unlike previous years. Why did she feel that way?
2. Research and discussion points
e) What kind of work does a "miko" (shrine maiden) do? Is there any similar work in your country?
f) Have you seen Japanese "omikuji" (fortune slips) and "omamori" (talisman)? If you have, tell your class where you saw them, and what they looked like. If not, research and share your findings with the class.
g) Do you have something similar to omikuji and omamori? Where can you get them? How do people use them?
h) How do people in Japan spend their New Year's Day? Research and share your findings with the class. When you present your findings, you can use sentence patterns for "reporting," e.g., 日本では、～～～だそうです、～～～するそうです.
3. Creative tasks
i) How do you usually spend the year-end and New Year holidays? Create a presentation in Japanese to show your typical New Year holidays, using photos and illustrations.
j) Have you worked part time over the school holiday? Where did you work? What did you do? Tell the class about your experiences.
k) Have you ever worked over the year-end and New Year holidays? Was it a special job for the special season? Tell your class about your experiences.
l) In Japan, many people exchange nengajo greeting cards at New Year. Learn about nengajo at the site below. Make nengajo yourself and exchange them with your classmates and friends. It is popular to use illustrations of the zodiac sign of the coming year.
