Sixty-three issues of CNN have been released since its launch in December 2015. These have introduced a trove of learning activities designed for elementary, junior high, and high school students, drawn from articles on the Click Nippon and Tokimeki Shuzaiki websites. Common to all of these articles has been a focus on the life stories of real people. Our goal has been to introduce one side of Japan by relating the stories of people living there. We also wished for students to encounter new worlds through the window of Japan.
In this issue, Yoko Nishimura-Parke introduces the goals she wanted to accomplish with her teaching materials and activities, as well as her teaching plans published in Class Ideas of the Click Nippon website. Nishimura-Parke has been involved in the creation of a variety of teaching materials including the high-school textbook series Mirai and iiTomo, and has also shared many learning activities via CNN.

This issue marks the end of our regular distribution of the CNN newsletter. On August 21 (Sat.), we will hold an online CNN event, "Experiencing the Joy of Language."

【2】Essay:Real-life Examples Broaden Perspective and Excite Interest

I have been creating various teaching materials for around 30 years, beginning with my contribution as co-author to the Japanese language textbook series Mirai. When I create teaching materials and learning activities, I keep the following points in mind:

1. Whenever possible, present information that is new to students and contains an element of surprise for them. (This requires a fair amount of research.)
2. Whatever the topic, relate it in some way to the learners and their world.
3. The learners' intellectual level is always much higher than their Japanese level.

Making use of real-life examples and focusing on real people is a very effective way to adhere to the above points, and also to elicit learners' intellectual interest. Authenticity sparks this interest and resonates with learners, making them eager to compare and learn by example, or adopt a critical perspective. The use of real people can even offer an opportunity for students to learn life lessons through those people's speech, conduct, and beliefs.
When writing teaching materials or working on lesson plans, the most exciting stage of the process is developing them in various directions from the source article. The content of the lesson can reach beyond the boundaries of the course and connect to the world outside the classroom. The broad scope of such learning is beyond comparison with reading material that was artificially created simply to teach grammar points. Real-life examples allow for the sharing of genuinely moving experiences. Real life broadens students' perspective and sows seeds of interest, and can broaden their interest to both past and current events in the world. While there is only so much that can be done in a Japanese class, it would be wonderful if that class could serve as students' gateway to a global perspective. If we can present this entry point to students, it will be the first step toward nurturing them as global citizens.
One example of an article that aroused such deep emotion and broadened horizons was the one about Ikeda Mikio. Looking at the Class Ideas of the Click Nippon website, one can see that five different class ideas were based on this article. When I read the students' comments describing their reactions, I find myself amazed once again at the power of utilizing real-life examples.

In this issue, I would like to once again present these five class ideas. Please note the expansion of these ideas in each class and use this as a source of encouragement for future instructional activities.

CNNは2015年12月に創刊して以来、これまでに63号を配信し、Click Nipponや「ときめき取材記」ウェブサイトの記事を活用した小中高校生向けの学習活動案を数多く紹介してきました。これらの記事に共通しているのは、実在する人たちの「物語」であったことです。日本に暮らす人たちの「物語」を通して、日本の一面を紹介したいと思ったのです。また、小中高校生に「日本」という窓から新しい世界に出会ってもらいたいと思っていました。

【2】エッセイ：「本物」が引き起こす広がり（ニシムラ・パーク葉子）

外国語としての日本語の教科書シリーズ『Mirai』の共同執筆に携わったのをきっかけに約30年、さまざまな形で教材作成に関わってきたが、教材や学習活動を考えるときには、次の点に留意してきた。

1.できるだけ、生徒にとって新しい「おどろき」となるような情報を提供すること（そのために、リサーチをしっかりすること）。
2.どんなトピックでも、学習者・学習者の世界とつながりをもたせること。
3.学習者の知的レベルは日本語レベルよりもはるかに高いことをいつも念頭に置くこと。

以上の3つのためにも、また彼らの知的興味を引き出すためにも、本物を使うこと、実在する人を取り扱うことは大変有効である。本物であるからこそ、学習者は興味を抱き、共鳴したり、比較したり、見習おうと思ったり、あるいは批判的な視点で見たりすることに意味が生まれる。実在する人だから、その人の言動や信念を通して、人生という大きな器の為の学びの機会にすらなりえるのだ。

教材を書く、あるいは教案を考える時に、記事から色々な方向に発展させることは、一番ワクワクする段階である。授業の内容が科目の枠を超える。教室の外の世界と繋がる。このような学びの広がりは、単に文法事項を教えるために人工的に創作された読み物とは比べ物にならない。本物だから心から感動を分かち合うことができる。本物から学習者の視点を広げ、興味の種を植え付ける。世界で過去に何が起こったのか、今何が起こっているのかに広げることもできる。日本語の授業でできることはほんの少しかもしれないが、日本語の授業が「グローバルな視点の入口」になれば素晴らしいと思う。「入口」を示すことができれば、地球市民を育てるための第一歩になるのではないか。

そのような広がりと感動をもたらしてくれた記事の一例として、池田樹生さんの記事がある。くりっくにっぽんの活用術ページを見ても、この記事を活用して5つのクラスアイディアが生まれている。学習者の振り返りのコメントを読むと、これがまさに本物を使うことのパワーだと改めて目を見張る思いがする。

今号では、この5つのクラスアイディアを改めて紹介したい。それぞれの授業の広がりに注目していただき、今後の教師活動の糧としていただければ幸いである。
