部活のメンバーは、練習があってもなくても、とりあえず地下の体育館に毎日集まります。ふだんはおしゃべりをしたり、野球をやったり、簡単なストーリーをつくってビデオ撮影をしたりして過ごしています。いつも大会の直前になってから練習を始め、いっきに作品を完成させます。早めにしあげてしまうと、本番までテンションを保てない気がするからです。
大会は年に2回。10月に東京都の全日制高校の演劇大会、11月に定時制高校の演劇大会があります。夏休みに入る前にシナリオと配役を決定し、1学期の終わりか夏休みに入ってすぐ、合宿をします。合宿では、大会のことについて話しあったり、発声練習をやったりするなど、わりとまじめに演劇に取りくみます。たまには基本を学ぶことも必要なので、今年の合宿では講師を頼んで演劇講習会をひらきました。泊まりがけの合宿は、新入生と親しくなるいい機会でもあります。

The members of the drama club gather in the basement gym every day even if we don't have practice. Sometimes we just chit-chat, or play catch, or make up a simple story and perform it in front of a video camera. When a drama club competition is coming up, we start intensive rehearsals and perfect our performance in one concentrated series of practices. If we start rehearsing too early, we find it hard to maintain a good tension right up to the festival.
There are two theater competitions each year, one among drama clubs of full-time (daytime) high schools in Tokyo, in October, and the other among part-time high school drama clubs. We decide on a script and the cast before summer vacation, and right before the first term ends or at the beginning of summer vacation, we hold an intensive week of training. We take it pretty seriously, discussing the competitions and practicing voice projection and expression. It's a good chance to work on the basics, so this year we asked a specialist to come and give us a set of lectures on drama. A camp like this, when we all stay over in one place, is a good opportunity to get to know the new club members.
