【上段】搾乳機をつける前に、糞などで汚れた牛のおっぱいを雑巾でふいているところです。おっぱいをふいてやると、乳の出を促すホルモンが分泌されて、約1分後に乳が出てきます。搾乳機はうまくつけないと、ゴミや空気が入ってしまって乳がしぼれません。最近ようやく、うまくつけられるようになってきました。乳しぼりの手伝いのほかは、牛の糞をくまでのような道具でベルトコンベアに入れることもわたしの仕事です。
【中段】早朝の乳しぼりのあと、10時ごろから朝ご飯を食べます。左がホームステイ先のお母さんで、右がお父さんです。パパさん、ママさんと呼んでいます。この日のメニューは、しぼりたての牛乳と、ウインナとキャベツの炒めもの、おみそ汁とご飯でした。しぼりたての牛乳は味が濃く、いつもおいしく飲んでいます。
【下段】直ちゃんの弟、よしきくん（左）とよしきくんの友だちと。よしきくんは小学3年生。ときどき生意気なことを言ったりしますが、かわいいです。

[Top] Here I am cleaning the manure or other dirt from the cow's teats before we attach the milking machines. Cleaning the cow's teats stimulates excretion of the hormone that makes the milk flow, and about one minute later, the milk starts flowing. If you don't put the milking machine on properly, dirt or air can get in, and the milk won't come as it should. Only recently did I finally get the knack of it. One of my other jobs is clearing away the cow manure with a pitchfork and putting it on a conveyor belt that carries it out of the barn.
[Center] We eat breakfast at about 10:00, after the morning milking has been finished. On the left is my host mother, next to her is my host father. I call them "Mama-san" and "Papa-san." Our breakfast on this day was fresh milk and sauteed sausages with cabbage, miso soup and rice. The fresh milk is deliciously rich.
[Bottom] With Nao-chan's little brother Yoshiki-kun (left) and one of his friends. Yoshiki-kun is in third grade. Sometimes he says smart-alecky things, but he is really cute.
