Date: Country: Author(copyright): Themes:
2001/11 Japan The Japan Forum School and Education
Overview:
Students produce a brochure or website to introduce the students’ own school, in Japanese.

Worksheets and other materials:
Worksheet #5
Reference (PDF, 3MB): Brochures of Takayuki’s school (Others’ will be available on August, 2002)
Worksheet #4-2 (Sample Expressions) from Activity 3

Introduce the task of producing a brochure* about their school to the students. Suggest that the brochure aim at persuading Japanese students to choose their school as a study-abroad site.

Students discuss what content to include in the brochure, e.g., school name, location, number of students, number of teachers, subjects offered, clubs, annual calendar, explanation of events, sample schedule, messages from individual students, etc. Students may refer to Worksheet #5.

Example:
school name, location, number of students, number of teachers, subjects offered, clubs, annual calendar, explanation of events, sample schedule, messages from individual students, etc.

Tip:
The teacher may also have the students refer to the brochures of Takayuki’s school.

Divide the students into groups. Each group produces a brochure. The students must decide on a layout, and assign tasks such as collecting photographs, drawing illustrations, and writing the content. The teacher circulates among the groups, to give advice and help as appropriate.

Tip:
Teachers need to decide how much class time to use and how much of the project may be completed outside of class.

Post the completed brochures. Students critique each brochure. They should point out both strengths and areas for improvement.

* Students may create a website instead of a printed brochure. (If you would like to link your site to TJF, we will post a link introducing your site through the TJF website.)
