The Guidelines for the Course of Study 《→gakushu shido yoryo 学習指導要領 Guidelines for the Course of Study》 for senior high schools state that the objectives in teaching geography and history are "to deepen understanding and awareness of the historical process of the emergence of Japan and the world and the distinctive local features of lifestyle and culture, and to cultivate individual responsibility and character as a member of a peaceful, democratic nation and society that is an integral part of international society."
Subjects consist of World History A/B, Japanese History A/B and Geography A/B. Students must complete one credit in World History A/B and one credit in either Japanese History A/B or Geography A/B.
