The Guidelines for the Course of Study 《→gakushu shido yoryo 学習指導要領 Guidelines for the Course of Study》 for senior high schools state that the objectives of Japanese language education are "to foster correct and appropriate expression and understanding of the Japanese language, enhance ability to use the language to communicate with others, develop ability to think and reason, enrich sensibilities, nurture sensitivity to language, deepen interest in language culture, and foster respect for and advancement of the Japanese language." Content consists of Japanese Expression I/II and Integrated Japanese as well as Modern Literature, which includes writing by authors from the modern and contemporary periods, and Classics, which covers classical Japanese literature and kambun (classical Chinese texts), etc. High school students must complete one credit in either Japanese Expression I/II or in Integrated Japanese.
