Nagasaki prefecture. Located in northwestern Kyushu. The prefecture
is composed of four hilly peninsulas and many offshore islands.
Historically it played an important role as a channel through which
cultures from abroad entered Japan. During the centuries under the
national policy of seclusion in Edo period (1603-1867), Nagasaki
was Japan's only window on the Western world. The main industries
are manufacturing and fishing as well as tourism. Pop.: approx.
