Capital of Kanagawa prefecture, on Tokyo Bay. It is the country's
largest port. A small fishing port up to the end of the Edo period,
with the signing of the Harris Treaty in 1858, Yokohama was opened
to foreign trade. Today with neighboring Kawasaki, Yokohama is the
center of the Keihin Industrial Zone. Pop.: approx. 3,457,000 (2001). |
