The most thought-provoking event would have to have been Peace Day in Hiroshima. As for the Peace Day, the thing that stayed with me the most was how devoted to peace many people still are years afterwards. We have ANZAC Day here in New Zealand to remember the war dead, but it’s just not quite to the same emotional scale.
I had never had the opportunity to take proper documentary-style pictures of people like this before. As I would someday like to work as a photographer for a news magazine, traveling around the world, I believe that this has been an invaluable experience to me.
The main problem, I believe, was one of communication. Our rudimentary Japanese was great for saying things like “atsui desu ne (It’s hot, isn’t it?),” but fell apart when trying to describe something complex such as “Crop that picture so her face is in the foreground.” Luckily we had a translator. Natchan was very patient and spoke excellent English.
This event has certainly opened my eyes to the wider world. There is no way that I will be able to simply stay in New Zealand after seeing how interesting Japan is.
