These are the first people I ever spoke to in public in Japan. They had come to the Sumiyoshi Shrine to pay their respects (o-miya-mairi) bringing their newborn baby. The baby was a month old. Baby girls have the character for “small” written on their foreheads for this visit. (Polly)
