Pining After Summer
/ Tanaka Mariko(Yamaguchi)
Message from the photographer
We took photo after photo at the ocean. The open sky above and the deep ocean below made us feel as though we could rid ourselves of all our troubles. Mayu, who ran around in delight like a child, glowed even more than usual. We pulled off our loafers and socks and ran around together on the beach. We ran and ran, escaping our schoolwork, our future plans, our homework, all of it. The water was cold and refreshing, it felt so good. The sun, meanwhile, beat down on us. There will never be another summer like that. I miss it.
About the subject
I chose Mayu, who’s in the same school club as me. We went to the same junior high, and she’s two years ahead of me. I took tons of photos with her last summer. I knew that she was busy getting ready for her college entrance exams, but I chose to photograph her anyway because I wanted to capture the radiant person she is.
