Here are some suggested activities for Primary School students. Please adjust them for your students.
1. Let's have a look! (Comprehension Check)
a) Who is the author? (Point out the name at the end of the article. Answer: Gaga)
b) Look at the photo. What do you see? (The students might mention vegetables, a cucumber, an eggplant, a dish, green pepper, green beans and so on. If the students have no idea, ask c) and guide them toward the answers)
c) What are these vegetables? (A cucumber, an eggplant, a green pepper and so on)
d) Gaga made animal figures using the vegetables. What animals are they? (She made a horse out of a cucumber and an ox out of an eggplant)
e) When is the O-bon festival? (If the students don't know the answers, give them a hint by saying 'Let's find the kanji 月 and 日. What dates can you find?')
f) What is this set of a horse and a ox? (Answer: shoryo uma)
(The teacher explains the meaning and symbolism of shoryo uma here)
g) In Japanese, we can write the names of the vegetables in hiragana or katakana or kanji. Gaga wrote them in katakana. Let's find the vegetable words in the text. There are five of them.

2．Let's make shoryo uma!
What is one local custom observed for the O-bon festival? Let's have a look and try making shoryo uma ourselves.
a) Shoryo uma
After explaining what shoryo uma is and its meaning, let the students think how they can make shoryo uma by looking at the photo in Gaga's article. The students can make their own shoryo uma. They can use mini cucumbers and toothpicks or colored play dough instead.

b) Lanterns
During the o-bon festival, people light O-bon lanterns to welcome the spirits of their ancestors to their homes. Students can make their own paper lanterns and decorate their classrooms as for the O-bon season.

c) Flowers
For O-bon, people decorate the Buddhist altar in their homes with flowers for the ancestors. Let's make some paper flowers.

3. Let's try!
People gather together at O-bon for traditional festival dancing. There are many different kinds of local dances (called bon-odori) in Japan. You can watch some videos and learn how to dance too!

b) These are Japanese summer vegetables. Are there any vegetables that you know? Are there any vegetables that you have never seen before?

c) During the O-bon festival, people remember their ancestors and welcome their spirits back to the family home. Please ask your family about your great grandparents or great-great grandparents. Please tell your classmates about your ancestors.
(Many students have different ancestral backgrounds in multicultural countries. This might provide an opportunity for the students to get to know their ancestors and cultural backgrounds)

1. 読んでみよう、見てみよう！（内容確認のための質問）
a) 作者は誰ですか。（記事のいちばん下にあるライターが作者の名前と教える。答え：がが）
b) 写真を見てください。何が見えますか。（野菜、きゅうり、なす、お皿、ビーマン、インゲンなど。子どもから回答があがってこなければ、次のc）の問いかけをする。）
c) この野菜は何ですか。（きゅうり、なす、ピーマンなど）
d) ががさんは野菜で動物を作りました。何の動物でしょうか。（きゅうりは馬、なすは牛）
e) お盆はいつですか。（わからないときはヒントを出します。「月や日の漢字を探しましょう」）
f) この馬と牛のセットは何ですか。（答え：精霊馬〔しょうりょううま〕）
（先生はここで精霊馬の意味を説明しましょう。）
g) 野菜の名前はひらがな、カタカナ、漢字で書くことができます。ががさんはカタカナで書いています。野菜の名前を探してみましょう。野菜は全部で5つ出てきます。

2. 作ってみよう！
日本ではお盆にどんなことをするのでしょう。見たり作ったりしてみましょう。
a) 精霊馬（しょうりょううま）
精霊馬の意味を説明したあと、ががさんの記事の写真を見せながら、学習者にどうやって作るのかを考えさせましょう。
また、実際に精霊馬を作ってみてもいいでしょう。ベビーキューカンバ--（ミニきゅうり）と爪楊枝を使って作ったり、カラー粘土と爪楊枝などで作ってみてもいいですね。
