【1】Our school trip to Okinawa
Most schools in Japan have school trips called shugaku ryoko. School excursions (ensoku) are day trips but shugaku ryoko are usually several days long, and it is one of the biggest school events. Natsu is reporting about her shugaku ryoko. What did she do and what did she learn?

a) In what month did the school trip take place? How many days was it?
b) Why was Natsu worried?
c) Where did Natsu go on the first day?
d) What did Natsu learn about on the first day?
e) How did Natsu's perception of war change? Why do you think it changed?
f) What did Natsu do on the second day?
g) What did they eat on the second day? What kind of food was it? Why did they go to that particular restaurant?
h) How did they spend the night at the hotel?
i) What did they do on the third day?
2. Discussion points
j) What was the most important thing Natsu learned on this school trip?
k) What aspects of Okinawan culture did Natsu get to know on this trip? Make a list of things. Which one is the most interesting to you?
l) Have you had any experience that made you think about war by visiting somewhere? Share your experiences with your class.
m) Does your school organize overnight trips? If it does, where did you go? In which grade? What are the purposes of the trips? If it doesn't, would you like to go on a school trip? What kind of places would you like to go, for what purpose?
3. Creative tasks and research
n) Create an itinerary of Natsu's school trip.
o) Imagine that students from another country visit your area on a school trip. Where would you like to recommend they visit in your area? What kind of activities would you suggest? Create an itinerary of 3 or 4 days.
p) Research: Natsu said that they made Okinawan lion statues (shisa) in the Ryukyu village. What is a 'shisa'? Where do people place such statues? Why do they do so?
Do you have something similar to 'shisa' in your area?
q) Research: Find out about the Battle of Okinawa and share the information with your class.

o) あなたの地域に、他の国から学生が修学旅行に来るとしたら、どこを紹介したいですか。どんな活動ができますか。3～4日ほどの日程表を作ってみましょう。
p) リサーチ：なつさんは「琉球村でシーサー作り体験」をしたと書いていますが、シーサーとはどんなものですか。何のためにかざりますか。どんな場所に置きますか。あなたの地域には、シーサーのようなものはありますか。
