Homeroom: Reading our declaration on peace |

June 23 is Memorial Day, the day we pray for the repose of the souls of people who died in the Battle of Okinawa during World War II. Throughout Okinawa, schools and companies take the day off and memorial services for the war dead are held. There are always various activities organized on the theme of peace as Memorial Day approaches. At a general school assembly held last week, a woman who had served in the Himeyuri Gakutotai (a wartime nursing corps made up of higher school students and their teachers) gave a talk about her experiences, and then we presented a "Declaration of Peace" supported by the students of Haebaru High School.
In this photo, copies of the peace statement had been handed out in our homeroom period, and I'm reading it aloud for the class. The gist of the declaration was that, since we can see from history how war and armed conflict tramples on the dignity of humanity, we therefore resolve to do all we can to abolish weapons and create true peace for Okinawa.
