おかあ（お母さん）は、おとう（お父さん）とまったく逆で、明るくて、よくしゃべります。周りのムードを明るくしてくれる人です。思いやりがあって、テーゲー（沖縄のことばで、「適当」「だいたい」という意味。いい意味、悪い意味の両方で使われる）なところはおとうと同じです。ぼくは悩みごとがあったりすると、何でもおかあに相談します。そうするとおかあは、ときには優しく、ときにはかなり手厳しいアドバイスをしてくれます。おかあの趣味は釣りです。島の給食センターで働いています。

My mother's the exact opposite of my father: she's bubbly and talkative and always brightens up the mood. Like my father, though, she's also very considerate of others and kind of tege (easy-going). (Tege is an Okinawan word. It can be used in either a positive or negative sense.) Whenever I have a problem, I can always talk it over with her, no matter what it is. Sometimes her advice is gentle, sometimes it's pretty sharp. She works at the island's school meal service center, and her hobby is fishing.
