The Guidelines for the Course of Study 《→gakushu shido yoryo 学習指導要領 Guidelines for the Course of Study》 for senior high schools state that the objectives of teaching science are "to increase interest in nature, encourage the spirit of inquiry, engage in observation and experimentation, cultivate the capacity and desire for scientific investigation, and, at the same time, deepen understanding of natural events and phenomenon and foster a scientific outlook on nature."
Subjects include Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth Sciences. Students must obtain credits in two of these subjects.
Most schools have a laboratory for conducting experiments, etc.
