Battle of Okinawa

Battle fought in the final year of World War II on the main island
and surrounding islands. Allied troops landed on Okinawa island
on April, 1945 and met fierce resistance from Japanese troops on
the central and southern part of the island. Some 200,000 people,
including local civilians were killed. Organized armed resistance
ceased when the commander of the Japanese troops committed suicide
on June 23. |
