Roppongi
六本木
ろっぽんぎ
Amusement and residential district in the center of Minato Ward,
Tokyo. From the Meiji period (1868-1912) onward, it was home to
high-level bureaucrats and wealthy entrepreneurs; two regiments
of the Imperial Japanese Army were also stationed here. During the
Allied Occupation of Japan, the old regimental headquarters became
a US Army base, and a variety of entertainment establishments catering
to American military personnel sprang up in the area-the predecessors
of the restaurants, cafes, bars, and discos which today make Roppongi
one of the liveliest nightspots in Tokyo. Asahi National Broadcasting
Co, Ltd (TV Asahi), and the Haiyuza Theater are located
in Roppongi, as are the embassies of Spain and Sweden. In recent
years it has once again become a fashionable and expensive residential
area.
