I’d visited Miyagi many times before, but this time I was able to visit places I hadn’t seen yet like Shiogama and the island of Katsurajima. The people of the island welcomed us warmly. In those quiet, green environments you can hear the lively reverberations of children’s laughter, and without high-rise buildings and crowds of people to block its rays you can feel the warmth and magic of the sunsets.
I like to visit foreign countries—and I’ve even been all the way to Australia and the U.S. to take photos—but I didn’t have much interest in my country, Japan. Through the program, though, I experienced how, when you can speak the language of the place you visit, you can quickly establish a rapport with the people you meet and feel you want to see them again soon. That is something you can experience only in your own country, and it helped me gain a renewed interest in Japan.
I don’t usually spend much time with people my age or younger, and I’d been feeling frustrated that maybe I didn’t know how to have a good time with my peers. But after spending time with others on this program and being in a position of think about plans and other considerations, I realized that my older friends had always been looking out for me. It gave me an opportunity to think about how things look from different standpoints and perspectives.
