Allowance
おこづかい
Some high school students receive regular allowances from their parents; others get money from their parents whenever they need to buy something. The Kumon Children's Research Institute found in a 1999 survey that 60% of high school students receive a regular allowance and 38.5% of these get between 4,000 and 5,000 yen per month. Pocket money is spent, in order of frequency, on books, manga, candy, drinks, CDs, clothes, shoes, and cosmetics.
Another major source of pocket money is otoshidama; the money children receive at New Year's from their parents, grandparents, and relatives. 《→お年玉 otoshidama》
