Daniel goes to judo practice with his host family.
Emily makes kakigori (shaved ice). “Japanese shaved ice is delicious!”
A welcome party is held for the FOJ participants at Shobara Kakuchi Senior High
School. Members of the photography club have prepared homemade food.
The team visits artisans in the afternoon. Sawako and Daniel shoot pictures of
a man making hanko (seals).

A hyoguya, specializing in care of shoji and fusuma partitions, deftly mounts
new paper onto fusuma doors.
Natchan is the interpreter for the team (second from left). She kept close to
Daniel and Emily, sensitive to their needs.
The tatami man’s movements as he sew a fresh cover of reed-matting onto a tatami mat are swift and sure-handed.
The team is treated to iced barley tea in the office of the tatami shop.
A blacksmith forges red-hot steel before the eyes, and cameras, of the team members.
