Island located northwest of the main island of Okinawa. Known as
the birthplace of King Sho En, founder of the second Sho
dynasty of the Ryukyu kingdom, it has a number of important scenic
spots and sites of ancient monuments. Size: 15.4 (sq. k.), pop.:
approx. 2, 000 (2001). The major industries are agriculture and
