From the Deai text booklet:
The "High School Life" section of "My Story" (for all seven Deai students).

Worksheets and other materials:
Worksheet #2-1
Worksheet #2-2 (Vocabulary list)
Worksheet #3

Divide the students into six pairs or small groups. Distribute the photographs (see Materials above) of the six Deai students other than Yu, one Deai student to each group. Students describe what they see in each picture: activities, the setting, and anything else, and present their descriptions to the rest of the class.

Distribute Worksheet #2-1. Referring to the worksheet, the students pick out words they know and use them as clues to guess whose school it is. The teacher may add supplementary explanations in English about the school as appropriate.

Tip:
For more advanced classes, students read explanations (A) through (H) of the seven Deai students’ schools and match them to the correct Deai student, referring to the Worksheet #2-2 (Vocabulary list).

Distribute the "High School Life" passage in the "My Story" section about the Deai student to each group. Each group reads the passages to check their match of school and student.

Read Worksheet #2-1 together as a class and compare answers. Confirm whether each group correctly placed its Deai student.

Tip:
While comparing answers, the teacher should help students recognize the diversity among Japanese high schools. The teacher should also mention that what each of the seven Deai students sees and feels individually makes up his or her idea of "school image (school culture)". Even at the same school, views may differ from person to person.

Distribute Worksheet #3. Students fill in the chart with the name, type, and special features (programs offered, etc.) of the seven Deai students’ schools. Review the types of the seven high schools.

Tip:
Use this as a springboard to get students to think about what school image results from the organization and environment in a school. This exercise will pave the way for Activity 3.
